Acupuncture Treatment, Cost and List of Illness it Cures

Updated on May 4, 2011

Acupuncture, what does it cure? We all know that acupuncture is one of the greatest inventions of the Chinese clan but we don’t know the numerous ailments and terrible body conditions acupuncture cures. In this hub I’m gonna discuss what is acupuncture, how it works and the list of sickness acupuncture cures.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical procedure of inserting and manipulating needles into specified points on the body for pain relief and healing purposes. It is originated from the belief that living things (human and animals specifically) have a vital energy called "qi" that circulates through invisible energy lines known as meridians on the body. Each meridian is connected to different organs in the body. An imbalance, blocked and broken flow of “qi” represents an imbalance, blocked and broken circulation which results to illness and diseases. Wow, the Chinese really amaze me. Traditional Chinese acupuncture really makes sense, eh.

Acupuncture specialists insert needles into specified points along meridian lines to restore the balance of the flow of qi. There are over thousands of acupuncture points across the human anatomy.

The history of acupuncture and modern acupuncture is completely discussed in wiki.

How does Acupuncture Work?

If you want an acupuncture treatment, you may likely to undergo the following steps for acupuncture:

Patient assessment – the acupuncturist will gather health records and information about you. He may ask about relevant information related with your health concern. Basically, he will assess you if you’re fine to have the treatment.

Diagnosis and treatment – after the assessment goes the diagnosis and treatment. The acupuncturist will insert 6-12 acupuncture needles (acupuncturist use disposable needles sterilized with ethylene oxide or by autoclave BTW) to specified points on the body during the treatment. No worries, you may feel slight sting at first but after the needles were inserted, you won’t feel anything but comfort and relaxation. Acupuncture treatment usually takes 20 to 30 minutes depending upon your diagnosis. Sometimes it takes an hour.

Other acupuncture techniques may be applied – The acupuncturist may use the following techniques in some treatments:

Moxibustion – also known as “moxa”. This is the heating of needles with some dried herb sticks to warm and stimulate the acupuncture point

Cupping – this is the application of glass cups to create suction on the skin.

Electrostimulation – this provides electrical stimulation to two to four acupuncture needles

Laser acupuncture - non-needle stimulation of needles

Acupuncture Costs

How much will it cost per treatment?

Initial visit for acupuncture session and consultation costs around $100 to $125 although some doctors charge little less or more. Follow up appointments range from $50 to $100 per visit. Wellness clinics offer lower fees while professional medical doctors charge higher fees. Contact your health insurance provider if acupuncture is covered under your health insurance benefits plan.
