Meet the Team Azkals, nickname of the national football team of the Philippines. In this hub, I’m gonna line up the members of the most talked about sports team in the country today, the Team Azkals. Which is your favorite player? By the way, nice football jersey huh. In the mean time, enjoy my hub as this team has no official website yet.

Football has never been that popular like basketball and boxing in the Philippines but after some consecutive games, it seems that football is scoring some loudly goals in the country. The Philippine Azkals has wowed the Filipinos and its ASEAN neighbors after grabbing the victory over the confident defending champion Vietnam team in the 2010 ASEAN football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup. The astonishing 2-0 game was indeed a spectacular tournament knowing that the Philippine football team has never defeated Vietnam for more than 20 years.

After that big bang magic, the Team Azkals players became instant celebrities in the country especially the Younghusband brothers. Football is kicking some ass in the sports scene. Obviously why some guys throw away their fave basketball jersey for a while and shift to football. Going back home, the Azkals were welcomed just like some big World Cup football stars.

Azkals…What’s with the name?

Why are they called Team Azkals? The name was from the Filipino term ‘askal’ meaning street dog. It symbolizes aggressiveness, resilience, unbridled loyalty. “The askal, survives, even triumphs, amid meager resources, against all odds. It transcends bloodlines.” The name was suggested by fans from a big football forum. The term is quite being used now after the hip trending topics. Although, the team is also referred from the nicknames such as PH / PHL Booters, PH / PHL XI and Tri–Stars.

Azkals’ German head coach Michael Weiss is so brilliant for bringing back football alive in the Philippine team. The coach is assisted by Edwin Cabalida, Edzel Bracamonte and Rolando Piñero.

I follow soccer too, Fehl, like TattoGuy, so I vote this up. But I honestly never heard of these teams over this side of the pond. But well done for beating the unbeaten Vietnam. :)
