GSIS Benefits | Government Service Insurance System Philippines Benefits

By twentyfive

Being a member of the GSIS (Government Service Insurance System) is among the greatest rewards of working in the government here in the Philippines. It’s not only about having sustainable retirement pension but also being secured and insured in your entire lifetime career. In this hub, I’m gonna discuss and sum up the benefits of being a GSIS member.

After publishing about the SSS benefits, I’d like to say the GSIS benefits are more complex and would really amount to greater worth. Why do I say this? The pension benefits are in higher values compounded monthly and annually. Simply put, your private employer is not so better than the government. And there’s the risk of uncertain compensation from a private employer than the government. Bankrupt or not, the government will still be the government. In other words, the government who will back you up won’t disappear.

Another thing is that, there are more options regarding the pensions and lump sum amounts offered to members who will retire. The GSIS benefits and programs are more flexible and extend to the needs of the members. It’s not only about life insurance, loans and retirements. The launching the new GSIS ecard has been one of the most amazing things that’s been offered to the members. With it, you don’t only have ease of access to your membership records, you can also avail the cash advance and salary loans in one touch.

GSIS Retirement Benefits

Like I mentioned, the GSIS benefits are more flexi. The retirement or old age pension benefits aren’t only about retirement pension or lump sum cash. This kind of benefit is grouped into 5 categories and it’s your choice which retirement program you’re gonna choose to enjoy and suit you. They are:

  • Retirement under R.A. 8291 – you have the option to choose either to receive a 5 year lump sum or cash payment with instant pension
  • Retirement under R.A. 660 – known as “magic 87” (retiree’s age plus years in service must sum up 87) isn’t it an awesome way to retire early?
  • Retirement under R.A. 1616 – if you want to refund or withdraw all your GSIS premiums and receive gratuity payments from your employer at the same time, this option suits you.
  • Retirement under P.D. 1146 – according to this decree, only those who have been in government service after May 31, 1977 but before June 24, 1997 can avail of this retirement program. It gives you a choice between a basic monthly pension (BMP) and cash payment.
  • Retirement under R.A. 7699 – also known as ‘Portability Law’. If your creditable years of service won’t quality you for retirement pension, you can combine your SSS years of service together your GSIS years of service.

All GSIS retirement pensions and benefits are discussed in details in this website dedicated to all retirees: GSIS Pension and Retirement by going to gsis.gov.ph It may contain sample computations of basic monthly pensions as well as the lump sum amounts. Feel free to explore the website to understand the retirement programs better. You can share and connect with all the GSIS retirees and pensioners in the country as well.

GSIS Survivorship Benefits

When a GSIS member or pensioner died, all his qualified beneficiaries are entitled to receive lump sum amount or monthly pension subject to the survivorship program policies and rules. Qualified beneficiaries are the pensioner’s surviving legal spouse (provided he/she will not marry again) and dependent children under 21 or incapacitated children. If the pensioner was single, qualified beneficiaries would be his legal parents. Monthly pension for the surviving spouse will amount to 50% of the basic monthly pension of the late pensioner. Children will receive 10% of the BMP each child. Only 5 children are qualified by the way.

If you want to know more, read about GSIS survivorship pension and benefits plus requirements I listed on the related articles below.

GSIS Burial and Funeral Benefits

Qualified beneficiaries are not only entitled for monthly pensions after a GSIS member or pensioner died. A P20,000 funeral benefit is given upon the death of the member or pensioner. Beneficiaries are qualified to submit the NSO death certificate of the late GSIS member/pensioner, affidavit of funeral expenses, official receipt of the funeral expenses, other supporting docs like the NSO marriage contract (if the payee will be the spouse), NSO birth certificate of the beneficiary.

GSIS Separation Benefits

A GSIS member may be qualified to receive cash and monthly pension even if he didn’t reach the age of 60 upon his separation from service thru the separation benefit program. If you’ve been in the service for at least 3 years but less than 15 years, cash payment is equivalent to 100% of the Average Monthly Compensation (AMC) for every year of service payable upon reaching the age 60. If you’ve been in the service for at least 15 years, cash payment is equivalent to 18 times the Basic Monthly Pension, payable upon separation and the monthly pension for life will be starting at age 60. Provided you are under 60 years old.

GSIS Unemployment Benefit

Like the separation benefit, this is also under R.A. 8291. When a permanent government employee who has paid the required 12 months integrated contributions has been separated from service is entitled to receive monthly cash payments equivalent to 50% of the average monthly compensation (AMC). This unemployment benefit is depend upon the member’s length of service and ranges from 2 months to a maximum of 6 months. There’s a uniform schedule for this coverage of benefit. Feel free to ask if you have questions.

Do you know your GSIS benefits?

  • Yes, they've been discussed to me by my employer and GSIS
  • No, not until I read this article.

GSIS Disability Benefits

The disability benefits are for those members who became disabled, injured or impaired physically or mentally. Cash payments and monthly pensions depend upon the type of disability resulted. The amount of benefit will also depend on the member’s creditable service and average monthly compensation.

GSIS EC (Employees’ Compensation) Benefits

The EC benefits is another type of disability package benefit. This is merely employer-based contribution benefit. You have the option to receive cash income benefits for disability or death, medical and related services for injury or sickness and rehabilitation services ( in addition to monthly cash income benefit) for permanent disability provided you meet all their compensability conditions.

GSIS Hospitalization Benefit

Having the GSIS ecard, a member, pensioner and all of their beneficiaries (10% discounts for beneficiaries) can avail discounts from medical services from various partner-hospitals, including outpatient services and emergency cases, medicines as well as discounts in professional fees of select physicians. Patients can avail of a 50-percent discount if they use the medical equipment lent by the GSIS to the hospital; 40-percent discount if they undergo special diagnostic procedures; 35 percent for common procedures; 30 percent on room rates; and 10 percent on professional fees including consultation fees. That is according to GSIS website.

GSIS Very Affordable Life Insurance

One of the amazing benefits of being a GSIS member is their very cheap premiums for their life insurance programs. You could enjoy low premiums for life enhanced insurance, life endowment policy, personal insurance, fire insurance, vehicle insurance, and other miscellaneous insurance.

GSIS Loans

As the company slogan says “Kahit saan, kahit kalian, maaasahan.” GSIS offers easy loans to all of their members and pensioners. They are the emergency loans, cash advance, housing loans, consolidated loan, and policy loan. Using your ecard, you can avail these loans and get approved once qualified.

Good p.m. po

My husband contributed in GSIS for 15 months. He died last year so I've already received the burial benefit.Im in the process of applying for it. How do you compute po the rest of the benefit./ Thank you po.

twentyfive profile image

twentyfive Hub Author 14 months ago

Hi! Yes, he's entitled to receive burial benefits up to 20,000. If he has just completed 15 months on contributions, he's not eligible for retirement benefits. He may be eligible for EC benefits though. Just bring his service of records and other docs to the nearest GSIS at your place and they will look over his premiums and EC contributions from the GSIS database to know how much EC benefits you will receive.

Thanks for dropping by. God bless! :)

I have a total of more than 23 years in govt service and planned to file an early retirement after Dec. 2012 at the age of 53 years old. I am aware to receive an early retirement benefit from GSIS of 18 months lumpsum since i entered the govt. service as casual employee in the year 1986 and was in permanent position only in 1988.And will start to receive my monthly pension as i reach the age of 60. What other benefits shall i receive, and what RA shall i apply..

In order to avail of the 90 percentfor BMC at least 35 year must have been rendered. I would like to reguest for the consideration of my three years in baranngay high school . What will I do. Hi. My father completed 13 years in government service but unfortunately got confined in hospital few weeks back. He's planning to retire due to his health conditions. My dad's age is 56. Will he be qualified for GSIS retirement and what could be the benefits that he could avail?

twentyfive profile image

twentyfive Hub Author 13 months ago

Hello! He may be entitled for separation benefits because he has only completed 13 years of service. With that he will receive cash payment equivalent to 100% of the Average Monthly Compensation (AMC) for every year of service payable upon reaching age 60. Or he may choose to receive disability benefits. Best to go to the nearest GSIS office for assessment of your father and to know which is best for him according to the GSIS member's records.

Hi Abby :) You can file your retirement claim to your employer's liaison officer or you just file it yourself at the GSIS office nearest you.

Hi Ana! It's best to make an update to the GSIS office near you. Bring your supporting documents and they will surely make the update. The sooner, the better.

Hi, I would have only 11 yrs of gov't service by the time I retire from my gov't employment at 65. This does not give me eligibility for GSIS retirement benefits. Will I get any of my GSIS contributions back? I heard of the Portability Law and may apply to me since I have 29 years of SSS contributions. Under that law,. I can use some of those contributions to complete my minimum 15 yrs required for GSIS. How does this work? CAn you pleae give me tips on how I can avail of this and how much will I be able to get under this option? Help please! Tks.

My father had early retirement at 52 ( retires 1991). he ahd been in service for mre than 40yrs in Central bank in Davao City.

He thinks that he is not getting any more pension as he applied for the lump sum. He is getting confused sometimes and we are trying to help him. Is there any other benefits that we can access like hospitalization, medicines, funeral. monthly pensions as he is in and out of the hospital. He also cannot remember his GSIS number as the documents were all flooded. What can we do?

joannne 10 months ago

Gud day! I dont have any idea on how to do this on my own. Please help us. My mother is 77 years old and was a public school teacher for over 30 years in the philippines but migrated 12 years ago to the u.s and became an american citizen. Recently she came home and had a vacation but unfortunately had ongoing schemia and is now in the hospital for further treatment.Tried asking her about the gsis stuff and gsis number.., and all she can remember at this point is that schools always deducted certain amount from her paycheck for gsis purposes. The reason why I became interested asking my mother was because a friend of ours who's mother is also an american citizen, and is above retirement age, came home recently as well and claimed from gsis some lumpsums and benefits. Wasnt able to ask about the process they went through tho' since they went back to the u.s already and got lost contact of them. Kindly assist me with my queries, what are the process i have to go through, do they have records of my mothers gsis number and her employment record so they may be able to track down all public schools she rendered service to. Kindly help me please. I am not knowlegable with this kind of situation. I would highly appreciate some knowlege shared regarding this matter.Thank you so much!

I wish you all well and God Bless

But before said retirement was forwarded to the gsis, he died of cancer. I just want to know if we could still receive the lump sum retirement pay? Answers will be really appreciated. Thank you.

If the GSIS pensioner died, his spouse or beneficiary can claim funeral and burial benefits. Just bring NSO death certificate and the receipts of funeral expenses to the nearest GSIS office and two valid IDs and fill up a death claim benefit form (ask any GSIS official to give you the necessary form) If you must, show the pensioner's GSIS ecard, too.

Based on the below Paragraph, why GSIS tells that separation benefit can only get upon reaching age 60? How about upon separation fro company? Can anybody help clarify this. Assumed member had finished 3 years service.

Separation Benefits

1) For members with at least three ( 3 ) years but less than fifteen ( 15 ) years of service:

A cash payment equivalent to one hundred percent (100%) of the AMC for every year of service the member has paid contributions (creditable service), but not less than twelve thousand pesos ( P 12,000 ), payable upon reaching sixty ( 60 ) years of age or upon separation, whichever comes later.

Hi there. I'm not a permanent government employee, that being the reason why my employment at an LGU was terminated last June 30, 2010 after my mayor lost in the election. I was a member of GSIS for 9 years and have many loans with GSIS that went unpaid due to tough times, me being a single parent with a daughter & an elderly mother to take care of. What benefits can I expect given that I've many loans such as Conso-Loan, Calamity Loan, etc. I've been unemployed since June 30, 2010 and didn't return to any kind of regular paid employment for the past 14 months already. Reason why I don't approach GSIS is because of these loans. Please enlighten me. Thank you.

May I also ask a very confusing provision about burial funeral benefit which I read from the GSIS website itself. A member is entitle to P20,000 burial funeral benefit so on and so forth.. then at the end of the paragraph it says "must have rendered at least 20 years of service." What about many of us who were terminated/ separated due to political (natalong kandidato), health or any other personal reasons from GSIS who have less than 20 years of service? Does that mean we're not entitled to the P20K burial funeral benefit?

The report of my creditable service in the government as shown in my service record in my GSIS portal shows that I have unpaid premiums equivalent to 1.9 years. The said unpaid premiums are in the months scattered between the months I am paid with my monthly premium. Just want to know ho it happens. May I know where should I clear this up with? With the GSIS or with my employer. Thank you and more power!

My husband died at age 55 , in active service for 34 yrs. What other benefits my only child(24yrs old) and I are entitled to, aside from the burial claim. Thank you . Your immediate attention will be highly appreciated.

I retired at age 49 with 23 yrs in service. Am I, as GRATUITANT entitled to burial benefit in case I die?

George 5 months ago

May I suggest that you put a separate counter, for the checklist of the requirements of each claim (Death and Burial, Survivorship etc.)so that memebers/guest may just pick one that he/she needs instead of going to the Follow-up Lane.

Inabot ako ng hapon sa kahihintay ng number ko, kukuha lang naman ako ng checklist.

Good Day! Can please somebody help me with my questions...Will the expired validity of GSIS e-card can be used for atm transaction.. GSIS told us that the pension was added to the account of my mom but unfortunately, the card was expired.....I wonder if we will be able to withdraw a certain amount or we really need to go to UNION BANK.....Please...Thanks and more Power!!!

@Maenie -you will be automatically a GSIS member if you're working in the government and when your employer has submitted all the documents needed to your membership and when you are already contributing premiums plus you have a GSIS ecard and GSIS membership info. Ask about your HR or Admin about it. Thank you :)

@Che - no, everything that is expired can't be used anymore. I suggest you go to the nearest Union Bank in your place to renew the atm card. Thank you :)

@Ginger I know your mom could get something. I suggest you help her visit the GSIS office and bring their documents 9both your mom's and your dad's) and check their records. If the premiums cover the requirements for the benefits, then your mom could get more. :)

@Anicia hi! Bring your statement of account from the Deped and go to the GSIS office. See your records and reconcile with them.

malenskie 5 months ago

Good day TWENTYFIVE! I would like to ask po, sa situation po namin, both my parents are already deceased, my dad passed away last 2009 and been worked for gsis almost 32 years then my mom passed away last year 2010 she is a public teacher been worked more than 30 years. Nung buhay pa po mother ko, nag file po siya for survivorship para sa kanya at sa sister ko po na special child and yet hindi nga po granted yung para saknya pero sa sister ko granted pero until now hindi pa po namin naclaim yung para sa sister namin, tapos ngayon nabalitaan namin about the "retroactive", so makukuha po namin yung para sa mother po namin from the death of my father until the death of my mom? And i would like to clarify po according to GSIS Act of 1997 (RA 8291)"when only dependent children are the survivors, they shall be entitled to the basic survivorship pension (which is the 50%) for as long as they are qualified,PLUS the dependent children's pension equivalent to 10% of the basic monthly pension for every dependent child not exceeding 5, counted from the youngest and without substitution", since my sister qualified po siya, this will be given to her po? Hoping for your reply sir.

After 18 years of government service, I resigned in year 2000 and work freelance . To my knowledge I still have a few years before my policy matures. I stopped paying the balance of my GSIS premiums. There are rumors around regarding new average monthly compensation computation to those who wish to retire on 2013. According to; that to get the average monthly compensation is equal to the Sum of monthly salaries from the time first employed to monthly salaries upon retirement, to be divided by the total number of months in government service. OMG, the salaries of teachers in 1980 is only Php600.00/month, in 1986 Php 1,000.00. Teachers received better salary in 2000. THIS IS TRULY THE END OF THE WORLD FOR THOSE WHO WILL RETIRE IN 2013 NOT IN 2012.

Sorry just replying now. Things were hectic..

@Benj You better let GSIS assess your benefits and obligations once you resigned. They know them best. Thanks and God bless.

@Gary (632) 479-3645

@Maria Bring your certificate to the GSIS office together with your ecard and valid IDs.

@Rwena GSIS will send you a mail if the check is ready for pick up. Bring 2 valid IDs with photocopy (back and forth) in claiming it.

@Rebby You can get them from the GSIS members assistance. Just bring valid IDs

@Precilla you must see your records and know about the cause so f deductions asap. Go to the GSIS and bring copies of your payslips from DepEd

@ TCS your liaison officer can submit the requirements for you. Usually they are your NSO birth certificate, marriage contract, your children’s BC, your DepEd appointment, and valid IDs.

@Virgie oh wow that was so long ago. You better go to the GSIS office near you and submit your documents and claim what you can claim. They have to look and check your data in the computer and personal records to see if you are entitled for claims.

To whom it may concern:

Shalom! My mother, a retired public school teacher, who just received her pension a year ago after taking a lump sum on retirement, sadly passed away. Thinking of a burial benefit from GSIS, we processed her application. However, since she had an outstanding loan, we were told that such benefit will not be given to us but instead used up to liquidate her loan as well the four months of supposed survivorship pension for my father. Just asking if indeed this the general policy. I hope you could find time to help us understand it. Thank you and GOdbless!

@Panganiban Just go to the GSIS office and check it out. I think there is no online inquiry yet.

@Wewe same answer to Panganiban

@Maria please go to the GSIS office in Davao. Thank you.

@Ada Yes since she’s the legal spouse

@Mario Ecard releasing takes time po talaga sad to say. But don’t worry, your pension will all be credited to your eCard once it is released and activated. Always call the GSIS to follow up.

@Karen Yes it’s fine to withdraw the pension even if the pensioner died while waiting for his death certificate from the NSO. It usually comes after 2 to 3 months. The cash you withdraw after his death will be deducted from the burial benefits you will receive. Make sure you will file once the DC was released. You can file for survivorship if you are the spouse of the late GSIS pensioner. Read my other article about how to file for GSIS survivorship benefits to know what to do.
