What is Pasma?

Pasma is a Filipino folk illness shared by most indigenous cultures, handed down from generation to generation, being practiced from strong tradition although there are no scientific findings about it yet.

Pasma is attributed to interaction of hot and cold, in other words, hot and cold imbalance. Like when cold water is believed to be harmful to health if one has been exposed to heat or has been in an extensive work or activity. Under certain conditions, the body's muscles are said to be "hot" and should not be too quickly brought into contact with "cold," in this case usually meaning cold water or air conditioned room.

Common Symptoms

Common symptoms of Pasma include excessive sweating of palms and feet, hand tremors, numbness and pains of different body parts, and veins appearance.

There are also dangerous effects associated with it like severe fever and colds that lead to respiratory and brain malfunctions. Nerve wreckage that cause blindness are also been reported.

Common Phenomenon of Pasma

  • A man who went home from a day’s tiring work took a shower then he’s reportedly been sick after that. Unexplained illnesses have punished him until weeks later he died.
  • A woman who works as a chef went home and showered without resting even a bit. Moments later, her vision has blurred. A nerve in the eye has almost broken. She’s lucky she can still see.
  • A woman who always washes clothes or showers after ironing a mountain of clothes has noticed she had varicose veins.

How to Avoid Pasma

You have nothing to lose if you practice avoiding Pasma. It is simple to avoid it, just follow these tips:

  • Don’t wash your hands or feet when you’re tired. Alcohol may be a good substitute. Wash after 30 mins of rest.
  • Don’t shower or sponge-bath after a tiring day or after heavy workouts. Take a rest and relax for an hour before hitting shower.
  • Don’t wash your face after long exposure to fire/cooking.
  • Don’t iron clothes after washing.

**Conclusion – Just don’t go into water when you’re so tired or has been exposed to heat. Relax, take an hour of rest before doing so.

How to Cure Pasma

Massage
Ginger, coconut oil and alcohol: A concoction of ground or mashed ginger (luya) is mixed with a little alcohol and coconut oil, for massage to the tremulous, painful or swollen extremities.
Ginger, garlic, camphor, onions, etc: Another preparation used for massage therapy is a concoction of ginger, coconut oil, onions, garlic, camphor, wintergreen and a small amount of scrapings from naphthalene balls.
Hugas-Bigas: More easily accessible is the use of hugas-bigas (water from the washing of uncooked rice) for use in massage treatments.

Wash and soaks
Salt soaks: For sweating of the hands or feet, soaking into lukewarm decoctions of salted water for one-half to one hour.
Salt and Bayabas Leaves The salt residue from home ice-cream makers is mixed with water and bayabas leaves, boiled and used as a healing wash to the extremities.
Salt and Gas: The ice-cream maker salt residue is mixed with "gas" (used for rural lighting) and used for washing the extremities.
Hugas Bigas (rice-water) is saved and used for washing or sponge-baths.
Tawas: Bath water is prepared with tawas boiled and dissolved in it.
Urine: In some provinces, the warm first morning urine, is used as a soak-and-wash for tremors, numbness and excessive sweating.

Others
Sand-and-Sweat Therapy: Seaside treatment – digging and lying covered with sand for 3-5 hours.
Herbal-Steam Theray: Steam from boiling decoction of lagundi leaves (with or without kalamansi leaves) is funneled toward the body, like a modified steam bath, for a half hour, daily as needed.
Pasmang-bituka: Daily salted decoctions of solasi (Holy basil).
Tawas: In regions where pasma is sometimes attributed to vengeful earthfolks, tawas is the folkhealer's favorite modality, not uncommonly supplemented with a bulong or orasyon.

How about after an intense gym work-out, and rested and cool-down for more than an hour, can I have my typical cold bath?

An hour rest after intense work out would be enough before hitting the shower. Yes it's OK. Your veins and body have normalized.

Often times, over sweating is triggered by touching something. Basta alagaan mo yung kalusugan mo and don't worry about pamamawis. Kung talagang love ka ng tao, he wont mind holding your hands no matter what. :)

Often over sweating is triggered from something like when you touched or hold something, your sweat glands in the hands react and make them perspire too much. Avoid lotions, moisturizers, or touching something that triggers your hands to sweat. Also avoid the factors that cause pasma which are listed in the article.

Also after shower, wipe your skin till it is completely dry. Before wearing socks and shoes, make sure your feet are completely dry.

Much better if you take a shower before you jog or run in the morning. Then after you jogged, rest up to 2 hours and shower again. If you are too tired, make it 3 hours.

You must not let your feet, back and head blown by too much air like electric fan or aircon. Huwag mo itututok.

It may be a sign of Pasma or your body is just adjusting.. Just take time to rest in between activities. Thank you. :)

@Andrew there is no scientific claim as to nakakahawa ang pasma. However due to tradition and experiences, it's better to practice what our ancestors tell us. In your case, there must be a big thing that triggers yur over sweating. What are the food you eat? Do you exercise a lot? Are you physically active? Are you stressed out?

Try taking time to relax. Eat lots of fruits and take fiber enriched foods. And don't take a bath after performing heavy tasks.

@She it looks like you have a high blood pressure. Better let the doctor examine you.
