SSS Benefits Philippines | Social Security System Benefits

Know your SSS benefits, know your future security. This hub is a response from lots of requests and inquiries about the Social Security System benefits in the Philippines, shortly called from the acronym, SSS. What are my benefits? How to compute them? How to claim? Lots of people ask 'how to apply for my social security insurance' as well. You have to read this hub and learn.

If you’re an employee working in a private institution or employer, you surely are paying or remitting monthly contributions for your SSS. OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers), household workers and all employees under the age of 60 other than the government are covered for the social security benefits. For those who ask, what if I’m not working in a company, can I contribute and become a member of the SSS? The answer is YES. Surely you can. If you are self-employed, you can apply to become a member then pay your contributions monthly or quarterly. The same thing if you’re not employed but capable of paying monthly contribution of your choice, you can still become an SSS member and enjoy all the benefits it offers to each member. That's what they refer to 'voluntary contribution' . I have included the latest Social Security System Contributions Schedule below for those who want to know how much they’re gonna pay monthly according to their compensations. Feel free to ask if you wanna know something. Below is the SSS Contribution Table for 2011.

source: sss gov
source: sss gov

Before I go to the benefits, I just wanna say SSS is just one of the benefits of a common private employee in the Philippines. Just like any insurance, it is so helpful financial aid to all members and their beneficiaries. The others are the PhilHealth and PAGIBIG Fund. GSIS is a version of SSS mandated to all government employees. Just so you know and just to avoid confusions here. OK now the SSS benefits…

MP (Monthly Pension) Computation

  • MP = P300 + (20% of AMSC) + 2% of AMSC for each CYS in excess of 10 years
  • MP = 40% of the AMSC
  • MP = P1200 (if your CYS is at least 10 or more but less than 20)
  • MP = P2000 (if your CYS is 20 or more)

** Your MP will be the amount resulted from each of the formula above WHICHEVER IS HIGHER

**Take note that the AMSC (Ave. Monthly Salary Credit) and CYS (creditable years of service) differ from every employee as our salary varies from time to time.

** A retiree has the option to receive the first 18 monthly pension in lump sum discounted at a preferential rate of interest to be determined by the SSS.

**The higher your SSS contribution and CYS, the higher will be your MP

**A bill has been authored in the senate to raise the minimum AMP to 3000. Let’s hope it will be approved and be raise to 5000 or more LOL

SSS Benefits in the Philippines

SSS Retirement Benefit

The SSS Retirement Benefit is synonymous to old age pension or simply retirement pension. It is a lifetime cash benefit paid to the retiree every month after he retired or after he stopped working reaching the age of 60 or 65. Any old age pensioner can receive his monthly SSS pension provided he paid at least 120 monthly contributions prior to the semester of his retirement. He’s entitled to received 13th month pay every December as well. In case he hasn’t completed a 120 months of contributions when he reached his retirement, he is entitled to receive a lump sum amount instead. Qualified beneficiaries will receive 10% of the monthly pension benefits or P250 whichever is higher. This is so seldom because usually old age don't have children below 21 anymore upon retirement. How to compute for your SSS monthly retirement pension? What about the lump sum benefit? I have demonstrated a sample formula computation of monthly pension in this hub. Check it out.

SSS Disability Benefit

The SSS Disability Benefit just like any other social disability program adopts the World Health Organization’s definition of disability which specifically refers to “restriction or lack (resulting from impairment) of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being.” And who are qualified for this disability benefit? Social Secutity System members who suffer partial or total disability and have paid at least one monthly contribution to the SSS before the semester of unforeseen event are qualified. Disability benefit is also paid in two ways: thru monthly pension and lump sum amount. A disabled member is qualified to accept monthly disability pension if he has paid at least 36 monthly contributions to the SSS prior to the semester of unfortunate incident. However, the lump sum amount is granted to those who have not paid the required 36 monthly contributions. How much is the pension for disability? Just like any other type of pension, the monthly cash benefit is computed based on the disabled member’s number of paid contributions and the years of his membership. According to SSS, the lowest monthly pension is P1000 for members with less than 10 credit years of service: P1200 with at least 10 CYS and P2400 with at least 20 CYS.

SSS Sickness Benefit

Just like any human being who meets injury or sickness, SSS members can also avail for the sickness benefit. Sick benefit is a daily cash allowance paid for the number of days a member is unable to work for at least 4 days provided the member has paid at least 3 monthly contributions within the 12 month period prior to his sickness and all company sick leave pay for the year has been used. You ask how much will be the sickness benefit? The SSS member is entitled to receive per day a 90 percent of his average daily salary credit.

SSS Maternity Benefit

Obviously, the SSS maternity benefit is only intended to those female members who couldn’t work due to childbirth or miscarriage. Any female qualified for this is granted daily cash allowance provided she has contributed at least 3 months at the SSS within the 12-month period immediately before the semester of her childbirth or miscarriage. How much would be the maternity benefit? According to SSS, it is equivalent to 100 per cent of the member’s average daily salary credit multiplied by 60 days for normal delivery or miscarriage, 78 days for caesarean section delivery. Have questions? Feel free to ask me by commenting.

SSS Death and Funeral Benefit

Sounds morbid but we only die once. lol Anyway, if a SSS member died, his qualified beneficiaries and dependents could receive death and funeral benefits from the insurance company provided they are his legitimate spouse or children, illegitimate or adopted children under 21 of age. What if the member was single? His parents are qualified beneficiaries. What if she has no family or parents anymore? Well then the benefits will go to me. lol Seriously, the money will go to anyone the member listed as beneficiary in the SSS records. So it is very important to list and update your beneficiaries. When you died your soul can’t negotiate with the SSS anymore. There are two types of benefits for death and funeral: monthly pension and lump sum amount. According to the Social Security System, monthly pension is granted only to the primary beneficiaries of a deceased member who had paid 36 monthly contributions before the semester of his death. The lump sum on the other hand, is the amount granted to the primary beneficiaries of a deceased member who had paid less than 36 monthly contributions before the semester of death. The secondary beneficiaries shall be entitled to a lump sum benefit. If the beneficiary are entitled to receive monthly pension benefits, he will receive 13th month pay every December, too.

SSS EC Compensation Benefits

All SSS members both employees and employers are automatically entitled for the EC compensation program to receive generous benefits. Benefits from sickness, injuries, death, and disability are just among the broad coverage of this type of benefits from the Social Security System. I recommend checking out this official website to understand the EC benefits totally.

Loan Benefits

As a member of the SSS, you may also qualify to other benefits such as member loans, housing loans and business loans.

Do you know your SSS benefits?

  • No, not until I read this article.
  • Yes, they’ve been discussed to me by my employer.

Good day po,

I had history of threatened abortion nung first trimester so I had to file sick leave sa SSS.

Requesting to direct this comment to: Administrator, SSS Philippines.

I am a retired Filipino SSS Employee, who received pension benefit since the time I turned 62 (retro active)from 2007.

Sincerely yours

My wife and I are now resident of New Zealand and since turning 65, (2010) qualified age to receive NZ Pension (Superannuation). One of the conditions, if you received overseas pension, (presumably one provided for by a government pension benefit from that country) this effectively be deducted from the NZ pension benefit you received.

We have raised this issue with the NZ Work and Income, Ministry of Social Development, PO Box 27-178, Wellington NZ. The understanding of NZ Work and Income, the pension benefit, we received from SSS Philippines are GOVERNMENT funded. We claimed on the other hand that this was NOT the case, as we contributed to SSS as well as our Employer contributing the same to the employees fund.

Our request and for the many other retired SSS employees in overseas, a letter send explaining and justifying that SSS Pension Benefits paid to overseas Retired Filipino are NOT subsidise government funded (GSIS) but a PRIVATE PENSION FUND.

thanks for the prompt reply...

follow up question..

(just in case i get the chance to update my membership from employee to OFW within this year).

i've read some articles that for OFW members they can opt to pay their contributions annually and they can remit their contributions anytime of the year (or until Dec.31). If so, then this could allow me to pay for my lapsed months which i could not possibly do if my membership type is still employee? thanks alot..

I know that you can no longer pay for the lapsed months as SSS premiums cant be retroactively paid. You can only pay for October 2011 and the remaining months you wanna resume..Also make an update to change from employed to voluntary member.

Hello! Good Day! I got a question. My previous employer was a private sector. I was employed there for 8 mons. I checked my monthly contributions and happy to find out that it's exact 8 months. For now, I am employed under DepEd. I went to SSS office and asked if I could still continue my contribution. The officer there told me that I could still pursue my membership under voluntary which is 520 a month. Is it all right? Is it ok if I am government employee?

vhanj1104 7 months ago

Hi! I'll be a pensioner next year but SSS office informed me recently i still have to settle a salary loan balance, which obviously was not deducted by my former employer from my retirement pay. My problem is that the principal loan balance as of the date of my retirement (Sept. 1998) was only P8,000.00 but as of August this year 2011, said amount ballooned to P33,000.00 because of the accumulated interest of P8,000.00 plus penalty of P17,000.00. Could I avail of

your condonation/amnesty program? Please help me. Thank you.

good noon. hello po, the table shows range of compensation of P14+T with an MSC of P15T and employee contribution of P500.00. If a member has worked for 33 years and earns from 20T to 28T for the 60 month period preceding the retirement, ang computation ba nang monthly salary credits ay 15T lang ba po or doon sa recent salary nang member bago siya nagretire from employment. God Bless you.

hello twenty five! my auntie (who is single) aged 75 died last may 20, 2011. she is a voluntary member of sss with total contribution of 24 months. her date of coverage is jan., 1992 (she's 57 y/o that time) but her 1st contribution was made only on january, 1997 (when she was 61 years old). when we apply for the funeral claim, it was denied. sss personnel told us that when a person starts to contribute @ age 60 or above she can't claim any funeral or death benefit. we are so disappointed with that because we are not aware with that particular rulings. i have read all the guidelines in the website of sss and i have never encountered such provisions. do you have any idea about it? can you please help us. thank you very much! god bless you!

Sir, ask ko lang, my father is a member and he passed away and burried May 24, ive already filed the Funeral benefits and i was advised to just wait for the check to be ready. Regarding to our Death Claim, my father told me before na ang required total contirbutions is 120 months to be able to qualify for a pension he was 56 when he died. Matagal na hiwalay parents ko and my mom is nowhere to be found. As the eldest sa magkapatid, i just want to have an idea kung magkano makukuha namin sa lumpsum, ang contributions ni Papa ay 342 months wala cya utang na loan bayad lahat. i think 2 times lang ata siya nag loan but it was paid off immediately.

Hi! Had my myomectomy and oophorocystectomy operation last march 3 2011. I was unable to work for more than a month and as per advised by my doctor to take a month rest at home. I was not qualify to file sickness benefit due to lack of contributions? I was ignorant to SSS benefits untilI was operated then. Ang pwede lang daw i-file is ung partial disability but I still not filing it. hanggang kailan po ba pwede mag-file nito? Please advise. Hi Tharyl! :) Yes he's likely to be eligible. I suggest he continue his contributions and let him check his SSS records from the database at the nearest SSS office. So you'll know what's best for him and how much he's gonna contribute again. Just tell the officer, your dad will continue paying as a "voluntary member." They will automatically adjust his status and will tell you to do next. God bless :)

@Thetta - the online schedule of contributions is not so updated sad to say. I suggest you check your records sa SSS. I don't think makakaapekto yung partial disability sa pension. Your retirement pension will be based for your CSY and contributions. Yes, it's always good to know na pareho yung SSS contribution records mo sa employer, sa SSS and sa sarili nating kaalaman. God bless :)

Hi! Ask ko lang kung yun partial disbility benefit ko na naavail last 1998 ay makakaeffecto ba sa retirement pension ko.Nakakuha ako on line ng schedule ng contribution ko go the last 15 yrs only ,nakita ko doon na 327 lang ang total conribution ko for 30 yrs of service, kailangan pa bang i ask ko sa dating employer ang difference o di naman ito magkakaroon ng problema pag dating sa computation ng retirement pension ko. Thanks sa reply!

Pension Release is a flexible alternative to purchasing an annuity. If you are 55 years of age or over and have a suitable amount in your pension fund then you can release a tax–free cash lump sum of up to 25% of that pension without having to retire or take an income.

Hi Father_Son! :) What kind of loan he wants to avail? Diff loans require diff documents. SSS is so strict when it comes to loan but he can try to give you authority to act on his behalf. I suggest you go to the nearest SSS and see his records to know and assess what loan could work for him. There are salary loan, business loan, housing loan and other types of financing. God bless!

Hi Josie! :) The pension death amount? You mean the pension the beneficiaries will receive when a member dies? The computation is discussed on the article above on the retirement benefits. When a member died, his beneficiaries may receive pension or lump sum amount. The monthly pension is granted only to the primary beneficiaries of a deceased member who had paid 36 monthly contributions before the semester of death. The lump sum is the amount granted to the primary beneficiaries of a deceased member who had paid less than 36 monthly contributions before the semester of death. The secondary beneficiaries may be entitled to the lump sum benefit. God bless! :)

Hi Samuel! :) Yes he can claim his benefits from the SSS and is not required to submit a certificate of separation anymore for he's now 65. He may receive retirement pension if he has completed 10 years or more contributions. If not, he's still entitled for lump sum amount. About your question as to whether the company is required to pay for separation benefits, it depends on the company's compensation and benefits program. If you were talking about SSS EC (employer's compensation) I suggest you read this link to understand it better. http://www.sss.gov.ph/sss/index2.jsp?secid=338&cat

Hello CZ! SSS pays monthly pension thru the member’s designated bank. He is allowed to choose the bank nearest his residence thru which he wishes to receive his pension benefits under the “Mag-impok sa Bangko” program. This became mandatory effective September 1,1993. The member must open a single savings account and must submit to the SSS his savings account number and a photocopy of his passbook upon filing of his application. The original copy of the passbook must be presented for authentication purposes.Upon approval of the claim, the SSS will mail a notice voucher to the claimant informing when to withdraw the benefit from the bank. I recommend opening a savings account to trusted banks like LBP, BPI, Metrobank, BDO, and PNB since they are everywhere. Always assist your parents. God bless :)

How do you compute the daily salary credit that is needed to know the total maternity benefit we can avail?

Where can we OFWs avail maternity benefits?

I have contributed at least 64 contributions but was not able to continue for 5 years and am planning to continue again. Will the 64 contributions I made be credited for the 120 contributions required to avail for pension?

hi twenty five,

Maam,my father is asking me if i can apply for a loan sa SSS. He's in the US right now and as per our conversation he is already complete with regards to the payment of his contributions. Would this be possible, if i could apply onhis behalf. If so, would you be so kind to give me the requirements?

When a retiree reaches the age of 65 and he has not claimed for his SSS retirement benefit. Can he claim his retirement benefits from SSS and also from his company. I understand that a 65 year old retiree is no longer required to be separated from his employer when he files for his SSS retirement claim. Therefore, the certification of separation from his employer is no longer necessary. The retiree will be more than 5 years working in his current employer when he reached his 65 years old. Question: Is the company required by law to pay for his retirement benefit as well If he retires. The law I understand provide the retiree half month salary for every year of service separation benefits if he has been in service with his company for 5 years or more.

Hello down under! :) Since you are already 64, you can no longer complete the 120 months minimum requirement coz you'll be 65 next year. But you can receive lump sum amount for your retirement. The requirements are: Retirement claim application, Certificate of Separation from last employer, Certified true copies of birth or baptismal certificate of dependent children, Certified true copy of Marriage certificate (if with dependent children), Proofs of filiation for illegitimate dependent children; and SSS digitized or E-6 (acknowledgement stub) with two valid IDs, one of which with recent photo.

You can download the retirement claim application form here: http://www.sss.gov.ph/sss/uploaded_images/forms/ed

Hello Ayra! SSS has a policy for that answering the question, "What happens when the retirement pensioner resumes employment?" The monthly pension shall be suspended upon the re-employment or resumption of self-employed of a retired member who is less than 65 years old. The member shall again be subjected to compulsory coverage. At 65 year old whether employed or not, he can already claim for retirement benefit.

If the employee is not yet receiving his pension, then ask him if he applied for retirement. If he did, withdraw the application. If not, then it's fine. He'll still be deducted monthly and remit SSS contributions. He can do that as long as he's NOT yet 65.

Hope you're enlightened. :) God bless.

Hello Janz. Thanks for your patience. :) Well she can apply for Salary Loan. Since your mom is SE, make sure she has 6 posted monthly contributions for the last 12 months before the month of filing a loan. Let's say, if mag-loloan siya this May, dapat complete yung contributions nya the past year and naka-post sa SSS system.

Members can opt for one month salary loan and two months salary loan. The two are payable within two (2) years in 24 equal monthly installments. The loan must not exceed to 24000.

Requirements must be: submit an accomplished SSS Form ISL-101 and present the digitized ID card or E-6 acknowledgement stub with any two (2) of the following valid IDs,one of which with recent photo and date of birth.

• Unexpired Driver’s License

• Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) ID Card

• Passport

• Postal ID

• School or Company ID

• Tax Identification Number Card (TIN)

God bless you and your mom. :)

Good afternoon! It depends on what loan you're trying to avail. Example, if you're availing for salary loan, let's say one-month salary loan, you're required to have 36 posted monthly contributions prior to the month of filing the loan application. There are many requirements and conditions to be met kasi before you are granted a loan. It's best if you ask the specific loan you want to avail and SSS will find the perfect loan option for you. God bless :) I'm gonna publish something about salary loans soon so maybe stay tuned. Hope it would be helpful. God bless!

Yes the mentioned requirements are necessary because your late father's pension is not only linked through SSS but also with a bank. Banks are so strict we all know that. This means SSS must also comply with them. You may also be entitled to receive funeral grant of 20,000. Just submit your dad's death certificate and funeral expense receipts and valid IDs of the claimant.

Hi, my father is SSS pensioner, He just save his pension to his account, he died last year.

My mother went to the branch to declare that my father died and asked the managaer for the requirements how to get the remaining balance that was credited during the time that he's still alive. She was asked to provide all the following documents all original, which was not given one time. everytime she visit the branch to follow-up they would ask for additional requirements.

1. publication of his death

2. extra judiciary (children)

3. Birth certificate of children and marriage contract

4. death certificate

5. BIR

6. ID of pensioner and wife

7. baranggay clearance

8. heirs bond and surity bond

9. registry of deed

10.certification of No property holding

Her last visit, the branch manager asked her to provide extra judiciary for my brothers wife and kids, altough my brother is already dead, and his wife has a new family now. Is this really necessary? I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you.

Hi Neyami! If a member is already receiving his retirement pension, he may still receive his monthly pension even if he became disabled. Retirement pensions are paid as long as a member lives. Disability benefits are only for those who didn't retire. All members, retired or not, are entitled for the funeral and burial benefits. God bless! :)

i just have this nagging question in my mind... if a member has already retired and is now receiving monthly pension, can this member still be entitled to disability benefit? death and funeral benefit?

The total creditable year of service are the periods where a member continuously contributed his premiums without lapses. So it's important to update your contributions to make sure you don't have unpaid premiums. Keep your receipts or pay slips intact for future reference. Or they unintentionally forgot to remit. Since you're voluntary, your CYS are counted as long as continuous yung hulog mo. Again, be updated and keep your receipts. BTW, I'm a Ma'am. :)

bambi 14 months ago

Follow-up question, sir. What is the "total creditable years of service?" Kung ilan taon kang naghulog? How is this computed, lalo na voluntary kasi ang membership status ko. Thank you sir for clearing things up.

twentyfive profile image

twentyfive Hub Author 14 months ago

If he died, his primary beneficiaries(wife,son/daughter or whoever the SSS member listed as beneficiary in the SSS records) can receive funeral benefits. Just submit his NSO death certificate and funeral expenses to avail for the P20,000 funeral benefit to the nearest SSS there in your place. The deceased SSS member's beneficiaries may also receive monthly pension or lump sum money if qualified. You better have his records check if you're qualified. Sayang naman! God bless :)

The average monthly salary credit is based from your total creditable year of service. They compute it based from your total contributions not only from the recent. In the case of Sickness benefit, they use the six highest monthly salary credits within the 12-month period prior to the semester of sickness. The computation of Retirement benefit is different from that of the Sickness benefit. It's not a valid suggestion. If it was, ganon na ginawa ng lahat.

bambi 14 months ago

How is the average monthly salary credit computed? Kasi I've been hearing suggestions as a voluntary member na babaan lang ang contribution payment sa umpisa and then itodo sa last year yung maximum na 1,5++ contributions para mataas ang pension. Is this a valid suggestion?

The monthly pension of a partially disabled member is paid up to a certain number of months only according to the degree of disability. He can opt for a lump sum if the duration of pension is payable for less than 12 months.

In permanent partial disability benefit, can a pensioner opt for a lumpsum amount for the first 18 months even if he has paid more than 36 monthly contributions?

@Nancy- because SSS is a social insurance entity, a member can't just withdraw his or her total contributions anytime he/she wishes to. Unlike in the PAGIBIG Fund, anyone can avail for early retirement after 20 years of contributions. I suggest you continue to pay your contributions coz sayang naman especially if your premiums are higher. If you have completed the 120 months of contributions, you're qualified for retirement pension already. Think about it.
